My name is Kayvon Amir Mazooji and I go to Santa Barbara High School. My mentor and I worked on a new method for packaging MEMS devices to keep them functional in harsh environments.  This method involved welding the edges of a titanium container to a titanium container cap using a high powered laser.  We tested three different cross-sectional geometries for the edges of the container to see which one provided the best welding quality at the lowest laser intensity to ensure the least amount of heat transfer to the MEMS device.   MEMS devices are sensitive to heat because the separate components are made of different metals and will expand at different rates, causing dysfunction.  In addition to helping with my mentor’s project, I gave several practice presentations about the project and gave one final presentation in front of a larger audience.  I learned a lot about science and engineering, and increased my presenting skills.  It was an excellent experience. My senior year, I qualified for the award "AP Scholar with Distinction".  I hope to attend one of the UC's or Stanford next year, and want to major in some type of engineering or science. I am considering medical school after my undergraduate studies. I also plan to get my black belt in Kung Fu and travel.
