Program:
Apprentice Researchers
Year:
2008

My name is Julia Callender, and I participated in the Apprentice Researchers Program while I attended San Marcos High School. Through the program, I worked on a project in UCSB's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. My mentor's lab worked on developing technology for motion tracking cameras, and my project involved working out a way to test the accuracy of the lab's cameras. I learned how to use infra-red motion tracking technology, and wrote up documentation on how to use the infra-red camera system. I then worked out how to take the raw data from the infra-red system and compare it to the position data from my mentor's cameras using a MATLAB computer program, giving us an accurate measurement of the camera's accuracy. I had satisfying results to present at the end of the program, and I definitely learned a lot about lab work, gathering data, and presenting that data in a clear and professional way to groups of people. I'm currently a Biology major at UCSB. I entered UCSB as a Regent's Scholar and a member of the Letters and Science College Honors Program, and I was on the Dean's Honors list by the end of my first year. In the future, I plan to get more lab experience, go to graduate school, and ultimately participate in biological research.
