Winner of CSEP Logo Contest!
My name is Francisco Chima Sanchez, and I am a fourth year Mathematical Sciences major here at UCSB. I transferred here from American River College in Sacramento in fall 2014, and I am just about a quarter away from graduating. While here, I’ve been active in CSEP’s Scholarships for Transfers to Engage and Excel in Mathematics (STEEM), and I’ve been STEEM Peer Mentor for over a year now. While a part of this program, I’ve made plenty of friends and gotten to know professors in the math department, as well as helpful grad students. This year, I’ve also been involved in Hermanas Unidas de UCSB, a Latina/Chicana empowerment organization on campus.
In mathematics, I had the opportunity to do research in a summer research experience with CSEP looking at discrete dynamical systems and chaos. With the help of my advisor Dr. Björn Birnir, I spent ten weeks investigating these systems and writing computer programs to help analyze their dynamical behavior. This year, I am doing research in STEEM, hoping to determine an accurate and efficient way to approximate the solution to a nonlinear ordinary differential equation using a linearization. After graduation, I hope to go onto grad school in a Ph.D program in applied mathematics. If not, then also going into operations research or linear programming work would be great. (Anyone in those fields reading this and looking to hire, look no further.)
