Summer Mentor Training Series 2021
The Center for Science and Engineering Partnerships (CSEP) is hosting a 2 part series of mentor training workshops open to anyone who will be mentoring this summer wanting to grow and develop their mentoring skills. Zoom links will be provided after registration.
Designing an Undergraduate Research Project
Workshop Leader: David Weld, Associate Professor, 2020-2021 recipient of the Chancellor's Faculty Award for Undergraduate Research Mentoring, Department of Physics, UCSB
How do you determine the right scope and level of research for your summer intern? What should you consider? This interactive workshop will tackle those questions and also present ideas for how to nurture your intern’s independent thinking, how to deal with set-backs and how to check student progress.
Friday, June 4th 12:00 –1:15 PM, Zoom
Communicating Effectively with your Mentee
Workshop Leader: Samantha Davis, CSEP Undergraduate Research Program Coordinator, CNSI, UCSB
Students new to research (especially those from underrepresented groups in STEM) may be unsure of how to handle power dynamics they perceive in research relationships, and consequently avoid asking for what they need from a research mentor. In this workshop, Dr. Davis will lead discussions to help you clarify your expectations of your mentee and begin the necessary discussions to develop positive training relationships
Tuesday, June 8th 3:00 –4:00 PM, Zoom
